PocketPAM Help Note

Why can't I have PAM Livestock Data Entry enabled on my Handheld & Desktop Computers simultaneously?

As you would be aware PAM's livestock system maintains a "live" inventory of livestock. As you move stock from one paddock to another the pick lists of mobs in paddocks is automatically and instantly updated.

Because of this we can only have livestock active on one computer at a time. It would be a disaster if you were moving stock on PocketPAM while someone else was moving stock on the desktop computer. The mob-paddock pick lists would be instantly out of synchronisation.

So, when you log out your livestock data to PocketPAM, the desktop computer's PAM system becomes "View Only". You can choose to make your PocketPAM Livestock system "View Only" instead. This means you can view a list of mobs in paddocks on PocketPAM, but that's all.

Let's imagine if you could have both computers enabled.
A simple example of a potential disaster.
The Palm operator moves 2 mobs from Pdk. A to Pdk. B … on 1/1/2001
Then someone operating the Desktop machines decides they should record the sale of some of the mob from Pdk. B … But on the Desktop they are still in Pdk. A… So they move them to Pdk. B on 1/1/2001 and sell half of them. Now the Palm is out of whack with the desktop. And if we transfer the Palm data back to the desktop computer we would have 2 move records from Pdk. A to Pdk. B

There are many other scenarios of much greater complexity that could arise if two people could enter data together.

If we could have a radio link between the Palm and the PC we could do "live" updating of each … this would solve the problem. !! One day maybe.

Moving More Than One Mob From a Paddock in Pocket PAM

Unfortunately the program development system we have used for PocketPAM does not provide the functionality in the "Pick List" to allow multi selection of items… (did that make sense?)
Or put another way…
We can't enable you to select more than one mob at a time to move, treat, feed… whatever… because the program language won't allow it.
In some ways this is unfortunate, in other ways it is a blessing. To process multiples of mobs is quite complex and probably beyond the scope of the Handheld computer system.
